BOXSCORE 2 ST. PETER, Minn. -- A three-run first inning and a solo home run by
Lindsay Helbach (JR, Amherst, Wis.) in the fourth inning of the second game lifted the Augsburg College softball team to a doubleheader split with Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
Augsburg (10-28 overall, 7-13 MIAC) claimed a 4-2 win over Gustavus (19-13 overall, 13-5 MIAC) in the second game, after falling 8-0 to the Gusties in the first game, shortened to five innings via the NCAA eight-run rule.
The first four batters for the Auggies in the second game reached base safely.
Lauren Torborg (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) drove in the first run of the game on an RBI double, and a groundout by
Brittany Hecker (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) and a sacrifice fly by Helbach drove in two more runs. Helbach hit a solo homer in the fourth inning to left-center to cap the Auggie scoring. Torborg had two hits in the game.
Augsburg pitcher
Olivia Boerschinger (SR, Neenah, Wis.) threw a complete-game victory, allowing nine hits while not walking a batter and allowing single runs in the third and seventh innings. The Gusties stranded nine runners on base in the second game, including two runners on base in the third and seventh innings. An infield pop-up double play helped the Auggies survive the final frame.
A five-run fourth inning broke the first game open for the Gusties, who claimed the shortened victory with a run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gustavus took advantage of three Augsburg errors to score five runs in the fifth inning, with four of the five runs unearned against pitcher Boerschinger. Kaitlyn Bicek hit a two-run homer in the frame.
Augsburg was limited to one hit in the first game, a single by
Jenna Orth (FY, Melrose, Minn.) in the third inning. Augsburg had the bases loaded on two walks and a hit batter in the fourth inning, but was unable to score.
Augsburg closes its season with a doubleheader against St. Thomas on Saturday (4/26) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
