Orvick named All-MIAC in men's golf

Stellan OrvickMINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg University men's golfer Stellan Orvick (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) was named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team, while Auggies Zach Stewart (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and Avery Sawchuk (FY, Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS) earned All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team honors for men's and women's golf, it was announced recently.

Orvick was one of seven first-year golfers to be named to the 16-member All-MIAC Men's Golf team, which includes the top 11 finishers from the 2021 MIAC Championships, along with five members chosen by conference coaches. He finished the 2020-21 season, shortened to a spring-only campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a 74.1 stroke average in eight rounds, with a .904 (150-16) win-loss percentage. He scored in the 70s in all eight of his rounds this season, including season-best scores of 70 twice.

Orvick is just the fifth Auggie first-year golfer since the 1992-93 season to earn All-MIAC honors with a top-10 conference meet finish, joining Erik Helgerson, who accomplished the feat with a ninth-place finish in 2003; Todd Tourand, who finished second in 1995; Ben Erickson, who finished fifth in 1992; and River Goodmanson, who finished fifth in 2019. Orvick placed eighth at the 2021 MIAC Championships with a 1-over-par 217, tied for the fourth-best 54-hole score for an Auggie since the 1994-95 season.

Zach StewartAvery SawchukStewart and Sawchuk were named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Stewart finished third on the Auggie men's golf team this season in scoring with an 82.7 average, finishing in 41st place at the MIAC Championships with a 54-hole score of 245. In 16 career rounds in two seasons, Stewart has an 84.8 career stroke average.

Sawchuk was unable to compete in the 2020-21 women's golf season, due to an injury. She also competes on the Augsburg women's hockey team as a defender.
