Five Auggies named Academic All-District in softball

MINNEAPOLIS -- Five Augsburg University softball players -- catcher/outfielder Kayla Hanson (SR, St. James, Minn./St. James HS), outfielder Zoie Johnson (SO, Carlton, Minn./Esko HS), outfielder Katie Manecke (JR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS), pitcher Olivia O'Connor (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and shortstop Torrie Rehder (SO, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) -- were recently named to the Academic All-District Softball Team, as selected by College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA).
 
Hanson is an exercise science major with a 3.54 grade-point average, Johnson is a biology major with a 3.61 GPA, Manecke is a mathematics and data science major with a 3.98 GPA, O'Connor is a social work major with a 3.96 GPA, and Rehder is a psychology major with a 3.62 GPA. 

Kayla HansonA five-year veteran of the Auggie softball program, Hanson hit .250 (22-of-88) this season, scoring 14 runs with four doubles, seven RBI, 10 walks, a .285 slugging percentage and .347 on-base percentage. She stole six bases in seven attempts, and had a .971 fielding percentage, throwing out 19 runners trying to steal bases in 41 attempts. She had a hit in 21 of her 37 games played, with a run scored in 12 games.

In 138 career games (136 starts), Hanson had a .212 (58-of-273) batting average, scoring 45 runs with nine doubles, two triples, a home run, 21 RBI, 28 walks, a .271 slugging percentage and .304 on-base percentage. She stole 10 bases in 12 career attempts, and had a .962 career fielding percentage. Hanson earned Academic All-MIAC honors last season.

Zoie JohnsonA right fielder (26 games) and designated player (seven games), Johnson led all Auggie regulars with a .347 (41-of-118) batting average in 2023. She led the team in hits (41), home runs (4) and slugging percentage (.508). She scored 24 runs and had seven doubles and 24 RBI. She added five walks and had a .376 on-base percentage and .939 fielding percentage. As the No. 4 hitter in the Auggie lineup, Johnson had a hit in 26 of 37 games, with 10 multiple-hit games and five multiple-RBI games. She had a 12-game hitting streak early in the season.

In 71 career games (64 starts), Johnson has a .312 (63-of-202) career batting average, scoring 31 runs with 11 doubles, seven home runs, 31 RBI, seven walks, a .470 slugging percentage, .336 on-base percentage and a .954 fielding percentage.

Katie ManeckeA three-year starter who played at second base her first two years, Manecke moved to the outfield in 2023, primarily patrolling center field. Manecke hit .306 (33-of-108) in 2023, scoring 15 runs with two doubles, a triple, 10 RBI, eight walks, a .343 slugging percentage and .353 on-base percentage. She stole seven bases this season and had a .962 fielding percentage. She had a hit in 25 of 40 games, with seven multiple-hit efforts.

An All-MIAC honoree in 2021 and an Academic All-MIAC honoree in 2022, Manecke has started 107 of her 108 career games, hitting .295 (92-of-312), with 60 runs scored, seven doubles, a triple, 22 RBI, 37 walks, a .324 slugging percentage and a .380 on-base percentage. She has stolen 22 bases in 24 career attempts, and has a .955 career fielding percentage. A guard on the Auggie women's basketball team, Manecke also earned CSC Academic All-District basketball honors this season.

Olivia O'ConnorO'Connor started 19 games as a pitcher for the Auggies, also playing three games at first base. In her 19 pitching performances (106.0 innings, 13 complete games), she had an 8-10 record and 3.96 earned-run average, with one shutout. She struck out 74 batters against 43 walks, and allowed a .322 opponent batting average. She ranked seventh among MIAC pitchers in overall strikeouts, third in complete games and 15th in ERA. She had four or more strikeouts in 10 of her 19 pitching appearances this season.

An All-MIAC Honorable Mention and Academic All-MIAC honoree in 2022, O'Connor has pitched in 55 games (52 starts) in her Auggie career, with a 15-35 record and 4.36 ERA in 307.0 innings pitched. She has 176 career strikeouts against 117 walks and a .323 opponent batting average. She has 38 complete games and two shutouts in her college career.

Torrie RehderRehder started all 40 games at shortstop this season, hitting .269 (35-of-130), with a team-high 29 runs scored and a team-high 10 doubles. She added two triples, a home run, 21 RBI, 11 walks, a .400 slugging percentage and .336 on-base percentage. She stole 11 bases this season, and had a .927 fielding percentage. Augsburg's primary leadoff hitter, Rehder had a hit in 24 of 40 games this season, with seven multiple-hit games and six multiple-RBI games. She also tied single-game school records with a five-hit, four-run effort in Augsburg's season finale against Saint Mary's on May 4.

A starter at shortstop in all 77 of her career games, Rehder is hitting .264 (63-of-239) in her career, with 43 runs scored, 17 doubles, three triples, two home runs, 16 walks, 34 RBI, a .385 slugging percentage and .318 on-base percentage. She has stolen 14 bases in 14 attempts, and has a .920 fielding percentage in her career. Also a defensive specialist on Augsburg's volleyball team, Rehder earned Academic All-MIAC honors in the fall.

Under seventh-year head coach Melissa Lee, Augsburg went 20-20 overall (6-16 MIAC) in 2023.
 
The CSC Academic All-District team is part of the CSC Academic All-America program. Top student-athletes are nominated for inclusion on the Academic All-District teams by college and university sports information directors. Student-athletes must have a grade-point average above 3.50 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. The Division III Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the Division III Academic All-America teams program.
