2013 CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA FOOTBALL TEAMS
CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA PROGRAM
MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College's
Chad Thompson (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Chris DeVet (JR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) were named to the Capital One Academic All-America football squad for NCAA Division III, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), both as second-team recipients, it was announced on Tuesday.
A finance and accounting major with a 3.86 grade-point average, Thompson is the seventh Augsburg student-athlete to ever earn multiple Academic All-America honors, after being a
first-team honoree in 2012. A chemistry major with a 3.75 GPA, the Academic All-America honor is the first for DeVet in his career. Both were named to the
Capital One Academic All-District squad in November.
Augsburg student-athletes have been honored 28 times with CoSIDA Academic All-America honors since 1981, including 15 since 2005. Augsburg football players have earned nine CoSIDA Academic All-America honors since 1981. This is the second time two Auggie football players have been honored in the same year; Ted Schultz and Scott Hvistendahl both earned Academic All-America football honors in 1997.
A three-year starter at center, Thompson earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second-team honors in
2013,
2012Â andÂ
2011, along with earning Academic All-MIAC honors in both 2012 and 2011.Â
Thompson was the leader of an Auggie offensive line that helped the team produce 4,538 yards of total offense in 2013, a 453.8 yards per-game average that ranked second amongÂ
MIAC teams in overall statistics and 28th amongÂ
NCAA Division III teams nationally. Augsburg averaged 172.0 rushing yards and 281.8 passing yards per-game this season. Augsburg's offensive line also provided solid protection, allowing just eight quarterback sacks and 40 tackles for-loss this season. The Auggies' 0.80 sacks allowed per-game average is tied for 19th-fewest among Division III teams nationally, while the team's 4.00 tackles for-loss per-game average is tied for fifth-best nationally.
Over Thompson's three seasons as a starter, Augsburg averaged 427.6 yards of total offense per-game (12,828 yards in 30 games), while allowing just 106 tackles for loss and 28 sacks.
A defensive lineman, DeVet earned
All-MIAC first-team honors this season, after earning All-MIAC second-team honors in 2012. DeVet was an Academic All-MIAC honoree in 2012.
This season, he finished third on the team in total tackles with 63 (28 solo), including team highs of 12.0 tackles for-loss and 5.0 sacks, to go along with three pass breakups, six quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery. His 63 tackles were tied for 15th among MIAC players in overall statistics, while his 12.0 tackles for-loss were third-most and 5.0 sacks were tied for fourth-most. He had five or more tackles in eight games this season, including 10 tackles (two solo) in a 55-20 win over Hamline on Sept. 28 and 10 tackles (nine solo) in a 49-45 loss at Carleton on Nov. 16. He had two sacks in a 17-14 home loss to St. Thomas on Nov. 2.
In 20 career games, DeVet now has 115 career tackles (49 solo), including 20.5 tackles for-loss, 7.5 sacks, four pass breakups, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.
Under ninth-season head coach
Frank Haege, Augsburg finished 5-5 overall, 3-5 in MIAC play in 2013. Augsburg completed its third straight finish of .500 or above, marking the fifth time in the 81 seasons of Auggie football that the feat has been accomplished. Augsburg is 36-34 since the 2007 season.
The
Capital One Academic All-America program is administered by the
College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Top student-athletes, who have already earned Academic All-District first-team honors, are eligible for inclusion on the Academic All-America team. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their current institutions, have a grade-point average above 3.30 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. The Academic All-America ballot is voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in NCAA Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
The Capital One Division III Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2013-14 Division III Academic All-America teams program.
Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America programs since 2011. An NCAA Corporate Champion, Capital One began its affiliation with college sports with the sponsorship of the 2001 Capital One Florida Citrus Bowl (now the Capital One Bowl) and ESPN's Capital One Bowl Week. In addition, Capital One sponsors the ABC College Football Halftime Report, Capital One All-America Mascot team, Capital One Academic All Program, and supports all 89 NCAA Championships including the Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, and numerous other collegiate athletics programs.
