Auggies open indoor season with impressive efforts

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- With one of its largest rosters in recent years, the Augsburg University men's and women's track and field teams had several impressive performances to open the 2020 indoor season, competing at the Bethel University Gene Glader Classic on Saturday.

MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg had four of the eight competitors in the finals of the men's 60-meter dash from a 26-runner preliminary field, with newcomers Varney Conneh (FY, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) and Jaison Moore (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) leading the way. Conneh finished second in 7.21 seconds, while Moore finished third in 7.26 seconds. The times rank 10th and 14th-fastest so far among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sprinters in the event. Taron Busby (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Hope Academy HS) finished fifth in a personal-best 7.43-second time, while Parker Blake (SO, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) finished eighth in 7.73 seconds.
• Conneh also finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a 24.11-second effort, while Moore placed ninth in 24.56 seconds and Busby finished 11th in an indoor personal-best 24.68 seconds.
• Alex Bailey (JR, Palmer Lake, Colo./Lewis-Palmer HS) set an indoor personal-best effort in the high jump, winning the event with a 1.85-meter (6-feet-0.75) clearance, good for ninth-best so far in the MIAC this indoor season. Fritz Landherr (FY, Tracy, Minn./Tracy Area HS) also had a solid effort in his collegiate debut, clearing 1.70 meters (5-feet-7.0).
• Competing in his first collegiate track event, Sakariya Hussien (FY, Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins HS) won the 800-meter run in 2:06.61, with Erik Garcia Gonzaga (JR, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) finishing in seventh in 2:16.54. Ty Schneider (FY, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) made his collegiate debut in the 600-meter run, finishing third in 1:34.18.
• Cody Rieder (FY, Delano, Minn./Delano HS) made his college debut with a fifth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run, finishing in 9:29.30. Greg Miller (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) cracked the 10-minute barrier for the first time in his career in the event, finishing 10th in 9:57.88.
• Patrick Deng (SR, Crookston, Minn./Crookston HS) finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.34 seconds.
• Evan Bergemann (SO, Lake Crystal, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial HS) recorded a pair of sixth-place finishes in the throws, both with indoor personal-best performances. He finished sixth in the shot put with a 12.48-meter (40-feet-11.5) effort, while placing sixth in the weight throw with a 12.66-meter (41-feet-6.5) effort.
• Josiah Ferguson (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) finished second in the triple jump with a 10.82-meter (35-feet-6) performance.
• Augsburg sent two foursomes to each relay event, with the "A" squad of Busby, Conneh, Blake, Conneh and Alex Pruitt (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) setting a 1:38.01, third-place time in the 4x200-meter relay, and the 4x400-meter relay "A" squad of Deng, Blake, Schneider and Moore finishing second in 3:47.94.

WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
• Destiny Cummings (SO, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) made her collegiate indoor debut with a pair of outstanding performances in the throws. She finished second in the weight throw with a 12.90-meter (42-feet-4) effort, and finished third in the shot put with a 10.87-meter (35-feet-8) effort. Her distances are good for 11th-best in the MIAC in the weight throw and 16th-best in the shot put. Shadin Elkhair (SO, Fridley, Minn./Fridley HS) set a personal-best 11.19-meter (36-feet-8.5) effort in the weight throw, finishing seventh.
• Zoe Barany (FY, Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East HS) made her college track debut an impressive one, finishing second in the mile run with a 5:35.43 time. Close behind was Ann Sheely (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), who set a personal-best indoor time of 5:39.34, finishing fourth in the 21-runner field.
• Sprinter Joy Cooper (FY, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) opened her collegiate track career with a solid 8.64-second, seventh-place finish in the 60-meter dash, after running in 8.59 seconds in the preliminaries.
• Grace Hartman (JR, Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) set an indoor personal-best time with a 3:38.58 effort in the 1,000-meter run, finishing fifth.
• Riley Pohl (FY, Duluth, Minn./Denfeld HS) had a strong debut in the 800-meter run, finishing sixth in 2:38.55.
• Augsburg's 4x200-meter relay squad of Cooper, Jordan Terry (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS), Kaz Shinohara (JR, Tokyo, Japan/St. Paul Preparatory School) and Kennedy Pounds (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Brooks School (Mass.)) finishing fourth in 2:00.50.
• All-American sprinter Jada Lewis (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Edison HS) competed at the University of Minnesota Jack Johnson Classic on Saturday, finishing sixth in the 60-meter dash in 7.96 seconds, and ninth in the 200-meter dash in 27.29 seconds. She was the lone NCAA Division III competitor in both events. She currently has the fastest time in the MIAC in the 60 (7.81 seconds) and eighth-fastest time in the 200 (26.96 seconds).
