Augsburg to host quarterfinal in NCAA men's hockey playoffs

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the seventh time in school history and fifth time in a seven-year span, the Augsburg University men's hockey team wiil compete in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. And for the first time, Augsburg will host a quarterfinal-round game at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Augsburg (24-4-0 overall), the regular-season champions of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, will host either St. Norbert College (Wis., 23-6-0 overall) or MIAC postseason playoff champion St. Olaf College (11-14-3 overall) in a quarterfinal game on Saturday, March 19 at Ed Saugestad Rink. Game time and ticket information will be announced at a later date. The winner of the quarterfinal game will advance to the national semifinals, which will be played at the Herb Brooks Olympic Center in Lake Placid, N.Y., on Friday, March 25. St. Olaf will travel to face St. Norbert in a first-round game this Saturday, March 12, in Ashwaubenon, Wis.

Augsburg is making its seventh NCAA tournament appearance (1984, 1998, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022), and will make its fourth appearance in the quarterfinals since the 2016 season. The Auggies claimed the MIAC regular-season title for the 11th time in school history, and third since the 2015-16 campaign, this season, but lost the MIAC title game to St. Olaf this past Saturday. Augsburg received one of the four "Pool C" at-large bids to the 12-team national tournament, and is one of four teams to receive first-round byes.

Augsburg enters the NCAA tournament with a 24-4-0 record under first-year head coach Greg May, tied for the second-most wins in a season in program history. Augsburg has won 17 or more games in five of the last seven seasons. Augsburg is 4-8-1 all-time in NCAA Division III national tournament history, having reached the national semifinals in 1984 and 1998, finishing in fourth place each time.

St. Norbert is making its 20th appearance in the NCAA tournament and fifth in a row (the national tournament was not played in either 2020 or 2021). National champions five times in program history (2008, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2018) and national runners-up four times, the Green Knights finished second to top-ranked Adrian (Mich.) in both the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season and playoffs, losing 12-3 in the playoff finals to the Bulldogs this past Saturday. St. Norbert has ended Augsburg's season the last four times the Auggies have appeared in the NCAA tournament (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), all at St. Norbert. This season, Augsburg swept St. Norbert in the opening series of the season Nov. 5-6 at Ed Saugestad Rink, winning 3-1 and 4-1.

St. Olaf is making its second appearance in the NCAA tournament, having previously appeared in the 2006 event, falling 2-1 to Wisconsin-Superior in the first round. Augsburg swept St. Olaf this regular season (Jan. 28-29), winning 3-2 in overtime at St. Olaf and 7-1 at Ed Saugestad Rink, but fell 5-2 in the MIAC playoff championship game to the Oles this past Saturday at Ed Saugestad Rink. The No. 7 seed in the MIAC playoffs, St. Olaf completed a dramatic run to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, topping No. 2-seed Concordia-Moorhead 3-2 and No. 3-seed Saint John's 3-1 before topping Augsburg in the finals.
