4 Auggies named to IWLCA Academic Honor Roll

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the ninth time in program history and seventh year in a row, the Augsburg University women's lacrosse team has earned Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Academic Honor Squad honors, with four Auggies earning individual IWLCA Division III Academic Honor Roll honors, it was announced on Wednesday.

To receive the team honor, women's lacrosse squads must maintain a 3.2 or higher team grade-point average for the 2022-23 academic year. A total of 288 women's lacrosse teams across all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA earned the team academic award. This year's Augsburg squad claimed a 3.392 cumulative team GPA and a 3.413 team GPA for the 2023-24 academic year. Augsburg has earned the academic honor in nine of its 11 seasons as a varsity program -- 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

For individual Academic Honor Roll honors, student-athletes must be a junior, senior or graduate student with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better. Twenty-four Auggies have now earned the honor since the program started in 2014.

Earning individual Academic Honor Roll honors for Augsburg were Kayla Courtney (SR, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS), Mackenzie Galazen (SR, Kimball, Minn./Rocori HS), Alexa Hoffman (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and Beatriz Sandoval Gomez (SR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS). Courtney, Hoffman and Sandoval Gomez each earned the honor for the second straight year, while it is the first honor for Galazen. All four also earned Midwest Lacrosse Conference All-Academic honors earlier this spring, and Hoffman was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's At-Large Team for the second straight year this spring. 

Courtney is a clinical psychology major with a 3.76 GPA, Galazen is a data science major with a 3.94 GPA, Hoffman is an exercise science major with a 3.66 GPA, and Sandoval Gomez is a finance major with a 3.86 GPA.

Kayla CourtneyAn attacker, Courtney started all 15 games for the Auggies in 2024, and she finished the season with 29 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers. She has appeared in 57 games in her Auggie career, with one goal and two assists for three points, to go along with 63 ground balls and 39 caused turnovers. She was named to the All-MWLC Sportsmanship Team in 2023.

Alexa HoffmanA defender/midfielder, Hoffman earned All-MLC Second Team honors this season after earning All-MLC First Team honors in 2022. A defender her first two seasons and attacker the last two years, Hoffman finished the 2024 campaign second on the team in scoring, with 32 goals and two assists for 34 points, adding 46 draw controls, 22 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers. Her 32 goals were ranked ninth among MLC players, with her 34 points 17th-best. She ranked sixth among league players in draw controls. Hoffman scored a goal in 14 of her 15 games this season, with eight multi-goal games and eight multi-point games. In 56 career games, Hoffman finished her career with 58 goals and six assists for 64 points, along with 77 ground balls, 77 draw controls and 42 caused turnovers.

Mackenzie GalazenA midfielder, Galazen was named to the All-MLC Sportsmanship Team this season, after earning all-conference second-team honors in 2022. She scored five goals with an assist for six points in games in 2024, with 35 ground balls, 27 draw controls and 15 caused turnovers. In 45 games in her college career, she finished with 39 goals and two assists for 41 points, with 106 ground balls, 133 draw controls and 52 caused turnovers.

Beatriz Sandoval GomezAn attacker, Sandoval Gomez appeared in 12 games this season, with two goals and two assists for four points, adding six ground balls and two caused turnovers. In 44 career games, Sandoval Gomez has scored seven goals with three assists for 10 points, with 32 ground balls, a draw control and 20 caused turnovers.

Augsburg finished 2-13 overall and 0-5 in MLC play in 2024.
