Three Auggies named CoSIDA Academic All-District

MINNEAPOLIS -- Three Augsburg University winter sports student-athletes were named to the 2021-22 Academic All-District 6 At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced on Thursday. Women's hockey player Payton Allen (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), men's hockey player Austin Martinsen (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) and men's wrestler Tyler Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS) all earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for the first time in their careers.

The Academic All-District at-large squads honor top student-athletes in 12 different NCAA men's sports and 14 different NCAA women's sports. The District 6 squads were made up of 10 NCAA Division III men's student-athletes and 12 NCAA Division III women's student-athletes from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Payton AllenAn exercise science major with a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average, Allen was named to the 2021-22 All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey team, her first conference postseason honor. She has also earned Academic All-MIAC (2020-21) and American Hockey Coaches Association Division III All-American Scholar honors (2019-20) in her career.

Allen led Augsburg women's hockey defenders in total scoring with 13 points, with two goals and a team-best-tying 11 assists. Her 11 assists were tied for 12th-most among all MIAC players this season. Among MIAC defenders, Allen was tied for fourth in total points and tied for third in assists. She had a goal or assist in 12 of her 25 games this season, with one multi-point game. She had a plus-9 plus-minus rating, tied for second-best on the team. In 63 career games, Allen now has three goals and 16 assists for 19 points, with a plus-12 plus-minus rating.

Austin MartinsenA finance major with a 3.61 GPA, Martinsen was named the 2021-22 MIAC Men's Hockey Player of the Year, and was a CCM Hockey/AHCA Division III West Region All-America first-team honoree and an All-USCHO Division III first-team honoree this season. He was one of 12 finalists for the AHCA's Sid Watson Award, given to the best NCAA Divisions II/III men's hockey player in the country. A two-time All-MIAC honoree (2019-20, 2021-22), Martinsen earned Academic All-MIAC honors last season. Martinsen was a captain and leader of the Augsburg's men's hockey team's run to its 11th MIAC regular-season title in 2021-22, its seventh appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament and third appearance in the national semifinals. Augsburg finished the 2021-22 season with a 25-5-0 overall record, 14-2-0 in MIAC play.

Playing in his fifth season as an Auggie, Martinsen had a dominant campaign. In 30 games, Martinsen finished with 16 goals and 22 assists for a team-best 38 points, leading the MIAC's overall statistics in points while tied for second in goals and tied for second in assists. He scored a goal or assist in 24 of his 30 games this season, with nine multi-point games. Martinsen had five power-play goals, tied for third-most among MIAC players, and his plus-12 plus-minus rating was 14th-best among MIAC players. Martinsen finished his 105-game collegiate career with 36 career goals and 53 assists for 89 points, including nine power-play goals and 10 game-winning goals, with a plus-32 career plus-minus rating.

Tyler ShilsonA finance major with a 4.00 GPA, Shilson earned his second career All-American honor in men's wrestling, finishing third at 157 pounds at the NCAA Division III National Championships in March and third at the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional. Competing in his second season as an Auggie, Shilson finished 33-4 on the year with four pins, 17 technical falls and six major decisions. This season, he finished second among all NCAA Division III men's wrestlers in technical falls against Division III opponents, with 16 in 74:01. He opened his national tournament run with two third-period technical falls, and after a loss in the semifinals, rallied back with two wins to claim third place at 157 pounds.

Last year, Shilson finished third at 157 pounds at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Championships, finishing 10-1 with two pins and six technical falls. A competitor at Division I Wisconsin (2017-18) and Chattanooga (2019-20) before transferring to Augsburg, Shilson is now 43-5 in his Augsburg career with six pins, 23 technical falls and six major decisions, and is 71-29 in his collegiate career with 11 pins, 31 technical falls and 12 major decisions. He earned NWCA Division III Scholar All-America honors this season.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District team is part of the CoSIDA Academic All-America program. Top student-athletes from NCAA Division III programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are eligible for inclusion on the District 6 team, one of eight Division III districts nationwide. Student-athletes must have a grade-point average above 3.30 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. College sports information directors in the district vote for the teams. First-team Academic All-District members advance to the Academic All-America ballot, voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members and CoSIDA members in each division. Academic All-America at-large honorees will be named in mid-June.

The Division III Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the Division III Academic All-America teams program.
