Auggies named to IWLCA Academic Honor Roll

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the eighth time in program history and sixth year in a row, the Augsburg University women's lacrosse team has earned Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Academic Honor Squad honors, with two Auggies earning individual IWLCA Division III Academic Honor Roll honors, it was announced on Wednesday.

To receive the team honor, women's lacrosse squads must maintain a 3.2 or higher team grade-point average for the 2022-23 academic year. A total of 288 women's lacrosse teams across all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA earned the team academic award. This year's Augsburg squad claimed a 3.41 cumulative team GPA. Augsburg has earned the academic honor in eight of its 10 seasons as a varsity program -- 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

For individual Academic Honor Roll honors, student-athletes must be a junior, senior or graduate student with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better. Twenty Auggies have earned the honor since the program started in 2014.

Earning individual Academic Honor Roll honors for Augsburg were Kayla Courtney (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS), Alexa Hoffman (JR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS), Rylan Lee (SR, Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS), Alexa Martin (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) and Beatriz Sandoval Gomez (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS). All five also earned Midwest Women's Lacrosse All-Academic honors earlier this spring, and Hoffman was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's At-Large Team this season. The IWLCA honor is the second for Martin and the first for the remaining four Auggies. 

Courtney is a psychology major with a 3.71 GPA, Hoffman is an exercise science major with a 3.59 GPA, Lee is a biology major with a 3.76 GPA, Martin is a secondary education/language arts major with a 3.63 GPA, and Sandoval Gomez is a business major with a 3.84 GPA.

Kayla CourtneyAn attacker, Courtney started all 16 games for the Auggies in 2023, and she finished the season with 14 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. She has appeared in 42 games in her Auggie career, with one goal and two assists for three points, to go along with 35 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers. She was named to the All-MWLC Sportsmanship Team this season.

Alexa HoffmanA defender/midfielder, Hoffman started all 14 games she appeared in during the 2023 season, standing second on the team with 26 goals and three assists for 29 points, with 18 ground balls, five draw controls and nine caused turnovers. An All-MWLC first-team honoree in 2022, Hoffman has appeared in 41 games in her Augsburg career, with 26 goals and four assists for 30 points, with 55 ground balls, 31 draw controls and 28 caused turnovers.

Rylan LeeA midfielder, Lee started all 16 games for the Auggies this season, scoring 10 goals with five assists for 15 points. She added 37 ground balls, 34 draw controls and 22 caused turnovers. In 27 games over two seasons at Augsburg, Lee finished with 13 goals and six assists for 19 points, adding 54 ground balls, 51 draw controls and 30 caused turnovers.

Alexa MartinA defender, Martin started all 15 games she played in this season, with two goals, 20 ground balls, a draw control and 15 caused turnovers. An All-MWLC Sportsmanship Team honoree in 2021, Martin has competed in 42 games in her Augsburg career, with two goals, 47 ground balls, seven draw controls and 27 caused turnovers.

Beatriz Sandoval GomezAn attacker, Sandoval Gomez appeared in all 16 games, starting 12, this season, with four goals and an assist for five points, adding 15 ground balls, a draw control and 11 caused turnovers. In 32 career games, Sandoval Gomez has scored five goals with an assist for six points, with 26 ground balls, a draw control and 18 caused turnovers.

Under 10th-year coach Kathryn Knippenberg, Augsburg finished 4-12 overall and 2-5 in MWLC play in 2023.
