Nelson was a four-year letter winner in both football and baseball and ranks among the school leaders in several quarterback statistics. He still holds the season record for completion percentage (.580 in 1970). For 37 years, Nelson coached and taught at Burnsville High School fro 18 years and at Eagan High School for 19 years until his retirement in 2005.
