Mathew Shannon ’04 (Track & Field/Football/Basketball) -- 2004 co-Honor Athlete … 3-time NCAA D-III All-American, in 2003 indoor 400m dash (4th), in 2003 outdoor 400m dash (3rd) and 2004 indoor 400m dash (5th), also qualified for nationals in 2003 outdoor 200m dash and 2004 outdoor 400m dash … First Augsburg men’s track & field athlete to earn All-American honors in both indoor and outdoor events in same year (2003) … 4-time MIAC champion, 17-time All-MIAC performer … Earned 2004 MIAC Indoor Championships Most Outstanding Performance honor and Indoor Track Athlete of the Year with 2 titles … Won MIAC titles in 2002 outdoor 400m dash, 2003 outdoor 400m dash, 2004 indoor 400m dash and 2004 indoor 55m dash … 2nd in 2003 outdoor 200m dash, 2nd in 2003 indoor 400m dash and 3rd in 2002 outdoor 200m dash and 2003 indoor 200m dash … Still holds school records in indoor 400m dash (48.44 seconds), outdoor 400m dash (47.18 seconds), indoor 4x400m relay (3:23.48) and outdoor 4x400m relay (3:15.71) … Also played football as wide receiver in 2000 and 2002 seasons, and basketball in 2000-01 season … Dean’s List honoree.
Mathew Shannon, Class of 2004 … A sprinter for the Auggies, Shannon is one of the most decorated student-athletes in the history of Augsburg track and field. Shannon finished his career as a three-time NCAA Division III All-American in the indoor and outdoor 400-meter dash, becoming the first Auggie to earn All-American accolades in both indoor and outdoor events in the same season. Shannon was a four-time MIAC champion and 17-time All-MIAC performer, earning the 2004 MIAC Indoor Championships Most Outstanding Performance award. He still holds school records in both the indoor and outdoor 400-meter dash, also anchoring the fastest 4x400-meter relay squads in school history. A business and communication major at Augsburg, Mathew has worked for Met Life, American Family Insurance, and Medtronic since graduation. In addition, he has led youth and family programs for the YMCA in Tampa, Florida. Mathew lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is in his third year as a volunteer advisor for the Sankofa Mentor Scholarship Program at Augsburg.
