Johnny Werket competed in three Winter Olympics as a speedskater, was a coach of two gold medal-winning Olympic speedskaters, and was one of the nation's leaders in speedskating during a long and storied career.

He won numerous honors in both national and international competition, and was a competitor in the 1948 (sixth in the 1,500-meter race), 1952 (sixth in the 1,500-meter race) and 1956 Winter Olympics. He coached Diane Holum and Anne Henning to gold medals in speedskating in the 1972 Winter Olympics, and also coached Olympic legends Eric Heiden and Dan Jansen early in their careers.
