Mayer excelled in both football and baseball at Augsburg. As a quarterback in football, Mayer was a three-year starter, throwing for 4,237 career yards on 354-for-784 passing – totals all still in the top five in school history. He was a two-year captain and earned All-MIAC honors in 1987. In baseball as a shortstop, he earned All-MIAC honors in both 1987 and 1988, as member of teams that won in MIAC title in 1987 and advanced to the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional in both 1986 and 1987, earning all-tournament team honors in 1986. In his baseball career (111 games), he hit .361 (134-of-371) with 112 runs scored, 31 doubles, 15 triples, and 10 home runs while also stealing 33 bases in 36 attempts. He hit .451 in his senior season and hit .393 in conference play in Augsburg’s MIAC title season of 1987. His seven triples in MIAC play in 1988 is tied for the conference single-season record. Mayer was a business management major at Augsburg. For the past dozen years, he has worked as a senior sales representative for Graybar Electric. He played amateur baseball for Minneapolis Warriors and was named to the team’s All-Decade Team for the 1990s. He currently serves as a youth sports coach. Mayer and his wife Marla ’92 have three children, sons Mason and Trace, daughter Meredith, and live in New Prague, Minnesota.
